I was asked to design a braai room. Based on drawings I was given by the Client.
House DB, Outeniqua Strand, 2021
The scheme the client proposed would have shaded the only small patch of lawn. I drew that proposal but also drew a different proposal which took the sun, the view and the shape of the site into consideration. The Client proceeded to build his own interpretation of my concept drawings without involving me further. Surprisingly, when I visited the site later, I found that the Client's interpretation was quite imaginative. They had incorporated elements from both proposals, blending them into a unique and functional space. The braai area was now a focal point, beautifully integrated with the garden, allowing sunlight to filter through at just the right angles. It was clear that the Client had a strong vision and personal touch, making the space truly their own.
Despite not being involved in the final stages, I felt a sense of pride seeing how my initial designs had inspired the Client. It reminded me that sometimes, collaboration can take unexpected forms, leading to results that are both surprising and delightful. The experience reinforced the importance of flexibility and creativity in design, and I left the site feeling inspired and eager for the next project.
