When faced with challenges during the initial construction of a house in Harare designed by another architect, the contractor recommended that the client consult me due to our previous collaboration on House Gau.
McMorran Lodge, Juliasdale, Zimbabwe, 1997
I was only asked to perform basic modifications. However, it became evident that a detailed site survey, including the rock slab and unique rock formations, was necessary. By examining the balance rock and tree formations, I quickly developed ideas for the site's approach and entrance. My father and I meticulously surveyed the site using a homemade manometer level and marked key points on the rock for reference. We also assessed the drip line of the trees and identified crevices for drainage. Despite three weeks passing without a concrete plan, I felt a breakthrough after praying, leading to a design that thrilled the client. The resulting holiday home, cherished for its stunning mountain views, was promised to be built regardless of cost.
